The story goes that after fleeing from the ruins of Troy, Aeneas and his followers landed on the shores of Sicily. There, they encountered a group of indigenous people, who welcomed them and offered to help them establish a new city. Aeneas was grateful for their kindness and named the city Drepanum, after the curved shape of the nearby coastline.
However, despite the friendly welcome of the locals, the gods were not so kind. It was said that the goddess Juno, who hated Aeneas and his Trojans, sent a fierce storm to destroy their fleet as they attempted to leave Sicily. Many of the ships were wrecked, and Aeneas was left to grieve the loss of his friends and companions.
But the story doesn't end there. It is said that Venus, Aeneas' mother and the goddess of love, took pity on her son and asked Neptune, the god of the sea, to help him. Neptune was moved by Venus' plea and promised to protect Aeneas and his surviving followers.
