As one of the oldest and most important ports in the Adriatic Sea, Bari has a long and storied history. According to legend, the city was founded by the hero Diomedes, one of the warriors who fought in the Trojan War. After returning home to Greece, Diomedes was pursued by the goddess Venus, who was angry with him for stealing one of her sacred statues. To escape her wrath, Diomedes set sail with a group of his followers, eventually landing on the shores of what is now Bari. Here, he founded a new city, dedicating it to the goddess Athena, who he believed had protected him during his voyage. Today, the city remains a hub of maritime activity, with ships and ferries from all over the Mediterranean docking in its bustling port.
