Panaji (Panjim) — charming capital of Goa, which blended almost all cultures and religions of the world: it has its own Latin Quarter, and the quiet river, and houses with red European roofs.

Long ago, in the ancient kingdom of Kadamba, there was a beautiful princess named Gomati. She was renowned for her beauty and intelligence and was admired by many suitors from far and wide. However, Gomati was not interested in any of them and instead had her heart set on a young fisherman named Damodar.

Despite her father's objections, Gomati continued to meet Damodar secretly and they fell deeply in love. One day, Gomati's father found out about their relationship and forbade her from seeing Damodar again. Gomati was devastated and decided to take her own life by jumping into the sea.

As she drowned, Gomati called out to the gods and goddesses to save her. Moved by her devotion, the goddess Parvati appeared before her and granted her wish to be reunited with Damodar. Parvati transformed Gomati into a river that flowed into the Arabian Sea, and Damodar was turned into a tributary that merged with her.

To this day, the Mandovi River in Goa, which flows through the port of Panaji, is believed to be the embodiment of the princess Gomati. The river is also considered sacred and is worshipped by the locals. Every year, a festival called Gomati Pooja is celebrated to honor the memory of the princess and her love for Damodar.
