Senj (Zengg) is a lovely old romantic town located on the upper coast of the Adriatic sea at the foothills of Velebit and Mala Kapela mountains, on the southern part of the Kvarner bay. Established by the Illyrian tribe, Senj is more than 3000 years old and is one of the oldest settlements in the Adriatic region and became one of the main centers of trade and culture during the Roman times, and, due to its strategic location, became a powerful fortress. Take a romantic walk around the charming streets of the old town. Marvel at the mighty Nehaj fortress is the symbol of Senj built on a hill. Don’t forget to take a look at the oldest Glagolitic printing plate in Croatia. Stroll and fall in love with untouched nature in the Nehaj park, the Velebit Nature Park and the Northern Velibit Nature Park. Feel the calmness and the atmosphere of holiness of Romanesque St. Mary Cathedral, built in the 11th-12th century. Go for a day trip to Plitvice Lake National Park (UNESCO heritage site). Take a beautiful photo at the modern Pavao Vitezovic fountain. Have a gelato at Pavlinski Trg, the main square of the city. Admire the Sabac tower and Velika Vrata ciy gates – one of the few remains of the city fortification wall. Have fun and socialize at the Senj International Summer Carnival and Senj Musical Summer. Pebbly Skver North beach is perfect for swimmers and families with children. Plaza Voda beach is situated in a secluded cove and offers amazing scenery and crystal clear azure waters and is perfect for snorkeling. Prva Draga beach offers great views and many watersport activities. Pebbly Skver South beach is very safe and is situated just some minutes of walk from the old town.

Food and drinks

Lika-Senj region has some amazing specialties that every visitor should try during their stay: licke police baked potatoes, kupus s mesom made of sour cabbage and pork, dzeladija jelly meat pot, grilled lamb, licka juha lamb soup and many more. Savor the freshest seafood at Kod Veska, Kresimire, Jozefina and Uskok restaurants. Enjoy the traditional dishes of Lika-Senj at one of the authentic kanoba taverns: Ivka, Lvlinji Dvor, Gajeta or Bunica.

The legend says that at the Nehaj hill there once lived a little girl called Zora Ridokosa (Red Zora) who was the leader of a band of orphans that was stealing from the rich. Some people say that she was the inspiration for Pippi Longstocking.
