This country of ancient culture was called "Arabia Felix" ("happy Arabia") by ancient historians. Yemen's prosperity was promoted by the famous trade caravan "route of incense", which carried myrrh, frankincense and other aromatic resins to Egypt, Asia Minor, Greece and Rome.

As the centuries passed. The trade routes have changed direction...

Yemen is located in the south and southwest of the Arabian Peninsula. Yemen also owns the islands of Kamaran and Perim in the Red Sea and Socotra in the Arabian Sea. The country borders on Saudi Arabia to the north and Oman to the east, and is washed by the Indian Ocean to the south and west. Yemen is separated from Africa by the narrow Bab-el-Mandeb Strait.

The vast majority of the population of Yemen are Arabs. Hindus, Pakistanis, Ethiopians, Somalis, Turks and Jews also live in the country. As a result of mixed marriages with various African nationalities, the inhabitants of the coastal strip have a darker skin color than the Highlanders. More than 100,000 nomads inhabit the east and northeast of the country. The national costume of the Yemeni is a shirt with wide sleeves and a loincloth, on the belt — a wide leather belt, behind which a curved dagger is stuck — a jambiya.
