Gorgeous beaches, never-stop nightlife and amazing culture

Tropical beaches, hidden temples, local markets and bustling nightclubs. Phuket attracts those who snooze in the sun and only start real life at night. Away from the coast, in downtown Phuket, local restaurants will treat you to chili and ginger-spiced dishes, and a walk through the old quarter will open a window to the past. Despite its size and geographical location, there are enough restaurants, hotels and adventures for both luxury and budget travel at any time of year.

Long ago, before the arrival of Buddhism in Thailand, Phuket Island was home to a powerful sea goddess named Chao Mae Thongkham. She was known to be a fierce protector of the island and its people, using her supernatural powers to bring good fortune and protect them from harm.

Legend has it that one day, a group of merchants sailing on a Chinese junk ship found themselves stranded on the island after their vessel was damaged by a storm. As they wandered the island in search of help, they stumbled upon a small shrine dedicated to Chao Mae Thongkham.

The merchants immediately paid their respects to the sea goddess, offering her their finest silks and other treasures as a sign of their devotion. Moved by their sincerity, Chao Mae Thongkham appeared to them and offered her assistance.

With her help, the merchants were able to repair their ship and set sail once again. In gratitude, they promised to spread the word of her power and grace throughout the land.

From that day forward, Chao Mae Thongkham became a revered figure on Phuket Island. Today, locals still pay tribute to her at her shrine and ask for her protection and blessings on their daily lives, especially for those who rely on the sea for their livelihoods.
