According to legend, Ashdod was once the site of the Philistine temple of Dagon, a deity believed to control the harvest. The story goes that after the Israelites captured the Ark of the Covenant from the Philistines, they took it to the temple of Dagon in Ashdod as a prize. The next morning, the Philistines found the statue of Dagon lying face-down on the ground, as if bowing to the Ark. They set the statue upright, but the following morning it had fallen again, this time with its head and hands cut off. The Philistines soon realized that the Ark was too powerful for them to keep, and returned it to the Israelites. To this day, the ancient ruins of Ashdod stand as a reminder of this ancient legend, and visitors can explore the remains of the Philistine city and imagine the dramatic events that took place there.
