The city has such industries as woodworking, metallurgy, textile production, as well as folk crafts (in particular, making wicker baskets). Many of the town's residents earn their living by fishing; fishing boats are also built and repaired here. Various spices, including pepper, are grown in the vicinity of the city. The city has a well-developed food industry.

Long ago, on the island of Bangka, there lived a powerful king named Dewa Kencana. One day, a group of fishermen caught a beautiful fish and brought it to the king. However, when the fish was cooked and served, the king found it to be tasteless.

In anger, the king ordered the fishermen to be punished. The fishermen pleaded with the king, explaining that the waters around the island were becoming more and more polluted, which was affecting the fish population. They begged the king to find a solution.

The king consulted with his advisers and learned of a spring in the nearby forest that was said to have magical powers. He sent his men to search for the spring and bring back its water. When they returned with the water, the king poured it into the sea and prayed for the fish to return.

To the amazement of everyone, the fish did indeed return to the waters around the island. The king was overjoyed and declared that the water from the magical spring would be used to bless the fishing boats and protect the fishermen.

Since then, the people of Bangka have used the water from the magical spring to bless their boats and ensure a bountiful catch. The port of Pangkal Pinang, which is located on the island of Bangka, is still known for its thriving fishing industry and the belief in the power of the magical spring continues to this day.
