Kavala’s advantageous location on the northeastern Aegean coast made it a major port city, which was founded by an expanding Thassos Island kingdom. St. Paul began his first European mission when he disembarked at Kavala.

As you embark on your cruise to Greece, one of the ports you simply cannot miss is the stunning coastal city of Kavala. Situated on the northern coast of the Aegean Sea, Kavala is a picturesque destination known for its rich cultural heritage, bustling port, and vibrant city life. Whether you're looking to soak up the sun on the beach, explore historic landmarks, or sample local cuisine, Kavala has something to offer every kind of traveler.

One of the must-see attractions in Kavala is the Kamares Aqueduct. Built during the 16th century by Suleiman the Magnificent, this impressive structure spans the length of the city, providing a glimpse into Kavala's storied past. Be sure to bring your camera, as the views of the aqueduct against the backdrop of the city are simply breathtaking.

For a taste of local life, head to the bustling market district, where you can explore the shops and stalls selling everything from fresh produce to handmade crafts. As you wander through the winding streets, be sure to stop by the iconic Tobacco Warehouse, a landmark building that serves as a cultural center for the city.

For those looking to spend some time on the beach, Kavala has several options to choose from. Batis Beach, located just a few minutes from the city center, is a popular spot for sunbathing and swimming. If you're looking for something a bit more secluded, head to the nearby island of Thasos, where you can explore hidden coves and crystal-clear waters.

If you're interested in history, be sure to visit the Castle of Kavala, a Byzantine fortress that has stood guard over the city for centuries. From the castle walls, you can take in sweeping views of the city and the Aegean Sea. And for a glimpse into the ancient past of the region, head to the nearby Archaeological Museum of Kavala, where you can explore artifacts from the Greek, Roman, and Ottoman eras.

From fresh seafood to savory meats, the flavors of Kavala are sure to delight your taste buds. Be sure to try the city's signature dish, mussels saganaki, a mouthwatering combination of plump mussels, tangy tomatoes, and creamy feta cheese.

As your cruise ship pulls into the port of Kavala, you'll be struck by the beauty and charm of this historic city. With its rich cultural heritage, stunning scenery, and vibrant city life, Kavala is the perfect destination for travelers seeking an authentic Greek experience.

The myths and traditions connect Mount Pangeon with Dionysus and Orpheus. This is the place that, according to Greek mythology, Dionysus, the god of wine, was brought up. Here is where the unfortunate Orpheus was devoured by the Maenads. And finally, this is where the tragic myth of King Likourgos took place, who was punished for inconsiderably and arrogantly opposing the worship of Dionysus.

The eighth labour of Heracles was to deliver alive wild man-eating horses to Eurystheus. Abderus, a friend of Heracles, decided to help him. After several days of travelling, Heracles arrived at Thasos and from there to the opposite coast. When they arrived at the palace of Diomedes and the stables where the horses were kept, Heracles killed all the guards, took the horses to the shore near the ship and assigned Abderus to watch them over. When Heracles returned to the shore and to the ship he found something terrible; the wild horses had devoured Abderus. Full of sorrow, Heracles buried his friend at this very site where he built a city naming it Abdera and instituted annual games in his honour.
