Mururoa Island is located in the southern part of the Tuamotu Islands archipelago and is part of the island state of French Polynesia.
Mururoa is world famous because it has been used by France as a nuclear test site since 1966.
Mururoa is an atoll of coral origin, with an area of about 15 square kilometers. At the center of the atoll lies a deep, ocean-connected lagoon.
