According to legend, the port of Propriano was the home of a mermaid known as "La Sirene." It is said that fishermen in the area would often hear her singing in the early morning hours, and many claimed to have seen her swimming in the crystal clear waters of the port.
One story tells of a young fisherman who fell in love with La Sirene after hearing her sing. He would sit by the port for hours, hoping to catch a glimpse of her. One day, she finally appeared to him, and they began a secret romance. However, the fisherman's family disapproved of their relationship, and forbade him from seeing her again.
Heartbroken, the fisherman returned to the port and called out to La Sirene. To his surprise, she appeared once more, offering to take him with her to the depths of the sea, where they could be together forever. Without hesitation, the fisherman accepted her offer, and the two disappeared beneath the waves.
Since that day, many locals claim to have seen La Sirene and her fisherman lover swimming together in the waters of Propriano. It is said that they are still together, living out their eternal love story in the depths of the Mediterranean Sea.
