The majority of the city's population is Chinese, who speak the Hakka dialect. The city is also home to the Malay and some other peoples.



The city has such industries as woodworking, metallurgy, textile production, as well as folk crafts (in particular, making wicker baskets). Many of the town's residents earn their living by fishing; fishing boats are also built and repaired here. Various spices, including pepper, are grown in the vicinity of the city. The city has a well-developed food industry.
