The first thing you see entering the harbor is plenty of white mansions and fortresses crowding up the mountain amphitheatrically. These are the 18th century houses of wealthy merchants, captains and shipowners from its glorified naval past.

Surprisingly Hydra is missed in Greek mythology. And famous Lernaean Hydra did not dwell there.

Hydra island has nothing to do with Lernaean Hydra. In fact its ancient name was Hydrea (Greek word for "water"), a reference to natural springs.
